Why not give them a try?

Does Eating Cake Make You Hairy?

If you’re planning to polish off that final slice of Victoria sponge you may want to think again!

A new study has shown that sugary foods can make us more hairy – YUK!  Overeating of sweet treats such as biscuits, cookies, croissants and cakes sends disruptions to our blood-sugar levels, which are responsible for regulating our bodies production of hair.

Eating excess sugar triggers a condition called insulin resistance, whereby the the body has to produce higher levels of insulin in order to cope with the amount of sugar it’s consumed.

How Old Do You Really Look?

Is Your Skin Aging Faster Than You Are?

Your age is just one factor in how your skin looks and feels. Your genes play a part (Go ahead, blame your mother!), but your daily habits and behaviors also play key roles — and only you control those. Whatever your age, find out whether your skin is keeping pace with your years — or racing ahead.

There comes a point in every persons life when you look in the mirror and there is someone different looking right back at you!

Have you ever looked at yourself and asked “when did that line appear?” or “how long have my eyelids had bags?”

1. How young are you?

In your 20’s – You have a great opportunity right now to protect that youthful, healthy skin and to keep it looking that way as you get older.

In your 30’s – Whether you’re starting a family, establishing yourself in a career, or both, you’re probably pressed for time.

In your 40’s – Being over 40 means you’ve had some time to accumulate wisdom and self-knowledge. But the sun has been using the same time to damage your skin, and you’ve been exposed to more pollutants, irritants, and other contributors to premature aging. It’s more important than ever that you wear sunscreen every day and follow a good skin care regimen.

Over 50’s – Those smile lines no longer disappear when you’re not smiling. I’ll show you what to do to keep your skin looking as smooth and supple as possible.

Why Do I Look Older?

Two factors contribute to negative changes in our skin as we advance from one decade to another: natural aging and sun damage. Why have a Gastric Balloon?

Weight loss programs shouldn’t only help you lose weight but keep the pounds off over time.  Choosing a gastric balloon program combines a clinically proven way to reduce hunger.

Key points:

  • Helps you control your appetite by the introduction of the “fullness” feeling;
  • You don’t need a general anaesthetic so less complications/risks
  • Usually no need to stay in hospital
  • No scars
  • Fully reversible at any stage
  • Teaches you the principles of long-term success

Gastric balloons are usually fitted as an outpatient procedure.  They take approx 20-30 mins to fit and is performed under conscious sedation or without any sedation.  You should be allowed to go home the same day, but you will not be fit to drive if you have been sedated.

For the 1st week you will be on a liquid only diet and plenty of water to keep you hydrated.  From 2nd week onwards you will be able to re-introduce solid foods to your diet.  It is advisable you stick to the guidance and nutrition regime the dietitian advises to obtain the best results.

Risks & Complications

As with any surgical procedure you can not expect this to be risk free.  Although it is not invasive surgery and there is no wound infection or anaesthetic risk you still have to be aware of the complications that can occur.  Bear in mind if you follow the advice given your risk to complication will be greatly reduced!

  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting – can cause damage to the stomach and/or oesophagus
  • Infection – if balloon becomes punctured the fluid may cause infection, this is a very rare complication
  • Increased acid production in stomach – may cause ulcer, this is a very rare complication
  • Intestinal obstruction caused by the balloon – very rarely the balloon may deflate and/or migrate and become lodged, this is a very rare complication and the balloon would need to be removed immediately

My experience

I personally had a Gastric Balloon inserted on 21st January 2009 and successfully lost 6 stone in 6 months!  Now that’s a very positive statement isn’t it.  Yes I lost 6 stone in 6 months, had my balloon removed on 8th August 2009, but it was not all plain sailing.

From the very first day I developed nausea and vomiting, which they assured me was normal as for the first 2-3 days your body trys to expel the foreign body that is sat in your stomach that you can not digest.  One week later it had started to subside and I was begining to feel human again, started eating soft solids and was doing really well.  Then my little girl decided whilst mummy was taking a nap she would sit on top of me and pretend I was one of her little ponies!

With the vibration of her bouncing on my stomach it managed to move the balloon slightly and this caused a small obstruction, of which I didn’t know at the time.  So I spent the next few weeks throwing up after every other mouthful.  Work colleagues became so worried they thought I was terminally ill, I would literally spend 2 hours of my working day in the toilet throwing up!

Three months into my balloon I went to hospital for my blood test and check up, and whamhad very low potassium levels.  So dangerously low they put me on a drip there and then in the clinic and admitted me to hospital for a week!

That’s when they discovered that my balloon had moved and was blocking my outlet.  They manipulated it over so foods could pass by but still I was sick.  As I knew they would want to remove it I very stupidly didn’t tell them that I was still being sick and sneaked off to the toilets to be sick when the nursing staff were not looking.  How desperate I was to be thin, when I look back I can not believe I was so stupid as to risk my life to be a size 18!  Yes when my balloon was taken out I had only reduced a few dress sizes from the starting size 22 to a size 18!

Was it worth it?  Yes I would do it all again, when you are uncomfortably obese and fed up with feeling ashamed and miserable there is nothing you will not do to be thin.   My experience was not the best but it would not put me off having another balloon if necessary to take control of my dieting again!

For my one bad experience you will meet 500 women and men who have had complication free gastric balloons.  If you are considering having one look objectively at everyone’s experience.  I am still completely satisfied with the result, I wish I hadn’t of played with my daughter that afternoon but I did and I paid the consequence.

For more information on Gastric Balloon’s you should speak to Secret Surgery, they are one of the market leaders in arranging Cosmetic & Plastic surgery and have a fantastic reputation among the worlds leading surgeons!

Understanding Why Gastric Bypass Surgery Causes Hair Loss

Why Gastric Bypass Surgery Causes Hair Loss

For many people who have gastric bypass surgery they are concerned about hair loss. They wonder, how much hair will I really lose? How quickly will it grow back?  A few, like myself, are taken completely by surprise the first time they see handfuls of hair coming out a few months after their bypass.

The most important question we all ask is, “is there anything I can do about it?”

To answer that question, we need to understand why gastric bypass surgery leads to some hair loss in the first place.

We all lose a certain amount of hair every day as part of the natural growth cycle. But after gastric bypass surgery, the body is forced to live on a drastically reduced amount of nutrients.

It compensates by conserving. The limited resources that do come in are diverted to where they’re needed most – major organs like your heart and lungs. So suddenly, your hair is forced to do without the nutrients it needs to grow and be healthy.

More follicles than normal enter “resting” phase (which is when an old strand of hair falls out, making room for a new strand to grow in it’s place). But it doesn’t produce new strands. This leads to thinner hair.

Can You Minimize Hair Loss After Gastric Bypass?

It doesn’t seem that there’s any way to completely avoid losing some hair after gastric bypass surgery. The drastic reduction in nutrients is too big of a shock to the system – not to mention the damage that comes from the anesthesia.

But it stands to reason that you can minimize hair loss by getting as many nutrients as possible to the roots of your hair.

  1. Proteins are essential building blocks of hair. After gastric bypass surgery, most doctors recommend you get at least 60 grams of protein in every day. Naturally, this is difficult when your stomach is the size of an egg. Fortunately, there are hundreds of different kinds of protein shakes and supplements to choose from. Find one you like and get as much of or more than the protein your doc recommends.
  2. Biotin is a B-vitamin that is said to encourage healthy hair growth. Take it daily, in addition to your other supplements.
  3. You can also try a supplement called Silica, available in most Health Food shops or via your GP. It contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, and horsetail extract. I don’t know which of these ingredients is responsible (or perhaps it’s the combination) but these vitamins not only help my hair look thicker and healthier, they made my fingernails grow for the first time ever

Making sure your body is getting all the nutrients it possibly can will help minimize hair loss after gastric bypass surgery.  It is essential for your well-being to have a varied diet using foods from all groups, and an assorted colour of fruit and vegetables everyday.

Stimulate Regrowth With Scalp Massage

Hair loss after gastric bypass surgery usually lasts about 3 to 6 months. Hopefully, during that time you’ve been getting in as much nutrients as possible and the amount of hair you’ve lost is minimal.

But you still want to start growing your hair back as soon as possible.

For most gastric bypass surgery patients, regrowth starts by the end of the first year. But you can speed up the process somewhat, as well as minimize the loss, by making sure the nutrients you consume actually reach the roots of your hair, where they’re needed.

You can do this by massaging your scalp. Scalp massage increases blood flow to your scalp, and therefore the roots of your hair. If that blood is rich in the nutrients we discussed above, they’ll be there to nourish your hair.

How I coped with my hair loss

During my hair loss episode, which started at around month 5 following surgery, I did a few things which seemed to help or make it less noticeable.

1.  I stopped highlighting my hair and went for an all over colour making sure it was peroxide free.

2.  Discontinued relaxing / harsh straightening treatments.

3.  Stopped using my GHD’s every day!  This was the hardest choice as my hair is naturally unruly and needs straightening, especially as I had discontinued relaxing it!

4.  Splashed out on a Brazilian Keratin Blow-dry treatment.  This made an immediate difference to not just the condition and texture but also to the amount of hair loss.  It seemed to just stop after this treatment!

5.  I resorted to wearing clip-in hair extensions to bulk up the whole upper area of my head.  As they were clip-in I was able to protect my hair by not using harmful glues to keep extensions in place.  I was also able to move them around to bulk up the parts that I needed.  I found that as my hair started to regrow I no longer needed the extensions at the back and gradually was able to put less in at the front.  Two years after my bypass I now only use the extensions when going out on special occasions when I want to bulk out my fringe area.  I had great fun using long and short extensions, it’s important to get the extensions colour matched to your hair, choose a good supplier who will take time to go through the shades with you.  I opted for real hair so I could dye to match my own hair as I’m obsessed with eliminating grey hairs!

6.  Took a daily multi-vitamin supplement (I opted for Arbonne Essentials Daily Power Packs for Women).

Artificial Sweetners & Diet Drinks

Metabolic acidosis occurs when aspartame reaches more than 86 degrees F.  That is because the wood alcohol changes to formaldehyde, which changes to formic acid.

Methanol toxicity is a death sentence, although diseases like multiple sclerosis are not. Multiple sclerosis has become rampant and systemic lupus is becoming more common as well. This is especially the case with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. Most of the time the victims are unaware that aspartame is at fault. The continued use of aspartame can irritate lupus to a point that it becomes a life threatening disease.

Many lupus patients become asymptomatic once they stop drinking diet colas. Those with Multiple Sclerosis see many of their symptoms vanish. Those with fibromyalgia and tinnitus also see great reductions in their symptoms when they stop ingesting aspartame.

People may be experiencing aspartame poisoning if they use aspartame products like Equal, NutraSweet, Spoonful, and the like, and have shooting pains, spasms, cramps, leg numbness, vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, unexplainable depression, joint pain, anxiety attacks, blurred vision, slurred speech, and other fibromyalgia symptoms.

Unfortunately, modern medicine is not capable of diagnosing people with aspartame poisoning and are rather diagnosing diseases in error. This results in doctors dealing with one disease/one organ giving too many meds that result in even more diseases. It is recommended to avoid searching out doctors to diagnose what is wrong with you when you can simply avoid aspartame altogether.

Diet Drinks

Diet colas are not actually diet products. Instead, they are products that have been altered chemically, contain aspartame, and too much salt. They actually make you gain weight and crave even more carbohydrates. Unbelievable, these beverages also have formaldehyde, which is stored in fat cells generally in the thighs and hips. Because of this, it should be no shock that many people are gaining weight and experiencing higher rates of diabetes and cancer.

Most people are aware that formaldehyde is used to preserve tissue in those that have died. Poisoning by formaldehyde results in symptoms of gastrointestinal and respiratory irritation, as well as irritation of the throat, mouth, and eyes. Other effects include renal damage and affects to the central nervous system that causes convulsions, stupor, vertigo, and even unconsciousness.

Those who are diabetic should be especially cautious with aspartame. Aspartame makes your blood sugar vary uncontrollably and since aspartic acid and phenylalanine are neurotoxin individuals may have severe memory loss. In diabetics, aspartame can cause seizures, panic attacks, brain damage, as well as uncontrollable rage and anger.

Non-diabetics who consume aspartame are likely to experience these same symptoms. Many times, children who have been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD are completely different once aspartame is taken out of their diet. Behavior modification drugs like Ritalin were no longer necessary.

Artificial sweeteners should never be given to children as they are at increased risk for neurological disorders. It is not uncommon for children to experience neurological problems or even grand mal seizures.
